A common question we get regarding our custom switchgear is “Why are IR windows so important”?
This video shows what the IR (Infrared) window looks like on one of our custom-made switches. The windows are small and easy to install while serving a very vital function. They allow you to see inside the switchgear while it is energized to look at your cable connections, bus connections, and more to see if your joints are healthy, passing current correctly, and to see if any hot spots are developing. If a hot spot develops, you could end up with a fault.
In this example, the window is located at the bottom of the door because that’s where the cable connections are for this switch. The IR window can also angle upwards, making it possible to monitor the fuses with the same window.
