Southwest Electric Company was established in
1946 when three brothers moved to Oklahoma City from Ft. Smith, Arkansas and
opened an electric motor repair shop. They worked together in a motor shop in
Ft. Smith and wanted to start a business on their own. The owner of that shop
gave them his blessing to start their own business, as long as they went at
least 150 miles from Ft. Smith. As it turned out, Oklahoma City was about 180
miles away.
Over the years, the brothers were also able to
expand the company into the transformer repair and transformer manufacturing
business, as well as expanding the motor repair business into northern,
northeastern and southern Oklahoma.
In the 1980's, Southwest Electric was sold to
it's present owner. Since that time, the Tulsa division moved into a larger
facility and expanded into switchgear field service. The three divisions
located in Oklahoma City, OK have all undergone major expansions in both
capital equipment and square footage during the last 10 years. The company also
expanded its business into custom switchgear fabrication in Louisville, Ohio.
This division was able to move into a brand new building designed for their
business needs in 2000.
Another area of expansion has been in power transformer field service with the
acquisition in 1997 of an established field
service group located in Nashville, Tennessee. In 2000, a field service
division was also established to operate out of Oklahoma City in conjunction
with the Power Transformer division. These two locations specialize in
substation maintenance and repair.
In 2002, Southwest Electric acquired the
Nashville Motor Service Center, which had been part of Grand Eagle Companies.
This acquisition gives Southwest Electric motor and switchgear capabilities in
Nashville and the surrounding area. The company now provides goods and services
across the United States, as well as in countries around the world. Southwest
Electric has grown and expanded its scope of activities since it's inception in
